Zena Levin Kaplan, 86, died at her home on January 10, 2016. Born on April 7, 1929, she was a life-long resident of Savannah and was the daughter of Ruth and Joe Levin. Zena attended local schools and was a graduate of Savannah High School. Shortly out of school and at the age of 18 she married her husband of 57 years, Harry Kaplan, who had returned to Savannah after serving in World War II as a member of the Greatest Generation. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by brothers Max (Audrey) and Irving (Phyllis); a brother-in-law Dr. Saul Vitner, and her nephew, Dr. Barry Levin. Her work experience includes the Joe Levin Company and Harold's Men's Shop. Most of all, she was a mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend to many.
She is survived by daughters Ina and Carolyn Kaplan; a son, Steven and his wife, Shelley; a grandson, David Kaplan; and her sisters Joan Vitner and Iris Hornstein (Boo). Additionally, there are many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and a great great niece. Her many devoted friends and family are a legacy to her engaging personality and loving concern.
Although a women of traditional values of family and home, Zena was a thoroughly modern woman. She was a talented hobbyist, creating lovely necklaces and bracelets as well as beading designs as a member of the Beading Society of which she was an active member. An excellent cook, her home and her kitchen were a frequent gathering spot for the extended Kaplan family and her many friends. She delighted in finding new restaurants which served as a gathering spot for her groups that met regularly. She also was enamored of the wireless age, learning quite sufficiently the technology of 'wi-fi' and HD Television. Her home was a daily plethora of beeps and calls from family and friends utilizing the 'new' technologies.
Zena was a member of Congregation Bnai Brith Jacob.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus. Shiva will be observed at the home.
