William (Bill) Thomas Martin passed away at home on December 9, 2016.
Bill was 90 years old and is survived by his beloved wife Argerie; three children. Dr. David Martin (Elizabeth) of Davidson NC, Susan Ann Halford (Thomas) of Naperville, IL, and Patricia Jean Herzberg (Jeffrey) of Bettendorf ,IA; six grandchildren: Kristin, Corey, and Kyle Halford, and Daniel, William, and Sara Herzberg.
Bill's parents, William E. and Helen M. Martin and sister, Dorothy Miller are deceased.
Bill was born on February 16, 1926 in Springfield IL, but spent most of his youth in Lancaster, PA. The family returned to Springfield where Bill graduated from Springfield H.S. and entered the Air Force in 1944 immediately after high school. After serving one year on Okinawa as a B-29 crew member, he was discharged in Dec. 1946. He enrolled at the University of Illinois in Jan. 1947 and graduated in Aug. 1950 with a degree in Chemistry. Bill later earned an MBA from the University of Chicago (1961).
Immediately after graduation from the University of Illinois, Bill went to work for Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, IL. He spent his entire career with Abbott until retirement in 1986. Bill spent several years as Director of Manufacturing of Abbott's facility in England where he and his family lived in Canterbury during the 1960's. Several years after returning to the States, he was promoted to Vice President of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, a position he held until retirement. During his career, he was responsible for a pharmaceutical plant which Abbott built in Puerto Rico in 1970.
Bill married Argerie Maria Vehos in 1954. Except for the years spent in England, they lived and raised their family in Waukegan, Illinois until Bill's retirement. They were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where Bill served on the church council for several terms. During the thirty plus years in Waukegan, Bill served on the United Way Board, Chamber of Commerce Board, The Economic Development Committee for Lake County, President of Victory Memorial Hospital Board and President of the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. Bill was also a member of Glen Flora Country Club.
Bill and Argerie built their home in Savannah in 1987 becoming permanent residents at The Landings in 1989. Bill enjoyed most sports, particularly golf. Bill and his wife were charter members of Messiah Lutheran Church where Bill served on the first church council and was treasurer for the first couple of years.
The Memorial Service will be at 3:00pm on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 1 West Ridge Avenue, Savannah, Georgia.
