SAVANNAH, GA - Walter Braxton Benton, 80, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Mary Van Sparrow Benton, died Wednesday morning, May 20, 2009, at Hospice Savannah.
Born on August 27, 1928, in Union Springs, Alabama, he was a son of the late Glenn Benton and the late Ruth Brooke Benton. He was the first of five to receive his Eagle Scout in the state of Alabama. Walter served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a graduate of Auburn University and worked for over forty distinguished years as a Civil Engineer in the Design Branch of the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Savannah. Walter was a proud member of (NARFE), The National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ollie Jo Patterson and his brother, Douglas Benton.
Surviving are his wife of fifty six years, Mary Van Sparrow Benton of Savannah, Georgia; one daughter, Vanessa Benton Clem and her husband Michael of Kansas City, Missouri; two sons, Frederick Benton and his wife Angie of Winder, Georgia, Richard Benton of Savannah, Georgia; four grandchildren, Melissa Benton and her mother, Debbie Benton, Christopher Benton, Michael Clem II, Ryan Clem; two great-grandchildren, Cynthia Benton, John Benton and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Friday evening at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue.
Interment will be private.
