Walter 'Walt' Ballew, Jr. died Saturday, January 28, 2017, in Savannah, Georgia. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on October 7, 1931, the son of the late Pauline G. Ballew and Walter W. Ballew, Sr. He attended Georgia Tech and graduated with a degree in textile engineering in 1954. While in college he met the 'love of his life,' Mary Dunn Ballew. After graduating, Walt served in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. Walt and Mary were married in Atlanta, Georgia. They were married for fifty-four (54) years until she passed away in 2008.
Walt and Mary lived in Marietta, Georgia for most of their married life. Walt worked as a sales manager for the Gillette Company. They were long-time members of Sandy Springs United Methodist Church and the DBS Sunday School Class.
In 2009 Walt relocated to Savannah, Georgia, and lived at The Landings on Skidaway Island. He was a member of Skidaway Island United Methodist Church. He is survived by his two sons, Walter W. Ballew, III (Ruth) of Savannah, Georgia, and Paul G. Ballew (Wendy) of Ponte Vedra, Florida; his seven grandchildren, Samuel Ballew (Joelle), Rebecca Wood (Chris), Susannah Mazzetti (Bryant), Jamon Ballew, Sarah Ballew, Thomas Ballew, and Eliza Jane Ballew; and his four great-grandchildren, Julien Wood, Eli Ballew, Daschiell Wood, and Mary Elle Mazzetti. He is also survived by his sister, Paula Bouas; 'uncle' Thomas Ashworth (Alice Faye); and other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to express its gratitude to Yvette Dewhart who cared for Walt and helped give him the long and full life that he was so blessed to have.
There will be a memorial service at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, Savannah, Georgia on Friday, February 3, 2017, at 10:00 a.m.
A funeral service will be held at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church, Sandy Springs, Georgia, on Saturday, February 4, 2017, at
2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs, Georgia.
