Our beloved Ginger Weil Caplan passed away in the arms of her husband, Jerry, September 17, 2023, 8 days short of their 69th anniversary. She and Jerry were deeply grateful for their wonderful life together, believing that their meeting was preordained.
She was an extraordinary talent rarely revealed and forever humble. She quietly participated in in many civic and religious endeavors, She loved to travel and she and her husband spent their lives exploring and discovering the world, many times over. She traces her family life in Savannah back to at least 1871, when her great grandmother and namesake Virginia Simon Weil was wed, and she wore her lace handkerchief to her own wedding in 1954. She was confirmed as a child at Congregation Mickve Israel, and became a B’nai Mitzvah at Congregation Agudath Achim at age 65. She was the oldest surviving president of the Sisterhood at Agudath Achim. She helped to found and staff, over many a sleepless night, the Savannah Women’s Crisis Line. She served as the chief school nurse examiner and as the Chairperson of the Board of the Savannah Speech and Hearing Center and remained on the board up to her death. She exuded an aura of sweetness and love, and virtually everyone who met her was drawn to her warmth and charm. She had an epic wit and kept her sense of humor right up to the end. She always put others first and put herself last. Ginger was a graduate of Savannah High School and of the nursing program at the Medical College of Georgia, where she was president of the student council, and where, upon her graduation was remarkably offered a position as an instructor of nursing arts.
Ginger is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Dr. Gerald Caplan, by her children Joel and Leslie, her grandchildren Derek Caplan, Roxanne Caplan, and Lily Martin, and by her 6 great grandchildren Tyler, Brooks, Josie (her namesake), Charlie, Penny, and most recently Jonah.
May she forever be remembered for her innate capabilities, her joy of life, her love of family, and her humble nature.
A graveside service was held at 12:00 pm on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at Bonaventure Cemetery with Rabbi Samuel H. Gelman officiating.
