Timothy 'Tim' Simon Burcombe Cooper, 87, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Polly Wylly Cooper, died Thursday morning, October 21, 2021, at Hospice Savannah.
Born in Bristol, England in 1934, Tim was the eldest of five children. During WWII, the family evacuated to Burnham-on-Sea to avoid the blitz. Returning to Bristol after the war in 1947, Tim entered Clifton College in Bristol where he studied classics, played tennis and rackets for the school. He attended Choate School in Connecticut on an ESU scholarship in 1953 and then studied law at the University of Bristol, receiving an LLB degree.
Tim did his National Service in the Royal Artillery being discharged with the rank of LtRA. He took an MBA at the Wharton Graduate School in 1960 and then came to Savannah to work at Union Bag-Camp in the budget department. He met his future wife, Polly Wylly, and married her in August 1961. Together they won the BIG city tennis tournament.
In 1964, when his daughter Jennifer was 3 months old, they moved to Bristol, England and Glasgow, Scotland to work in sales for a packaging company until 1970. The family, now including son Julian, moved to Barrington Hills, Ill., where Tim managed and owned 2 printing machine companies. They lived on a farm with goats, chickens, horses, a parrot with a 100-word vocabulary called Wiggle and a llama called Oglethorpe.
In 1985, the family returned to Savannah where Tim owned the Norrell Temporary Help franchise until 1992 when he sold out and joined Martin Sullivan to establish the Sullivan Group, now on W. Fairmont Ave., Savannah.
Tim has been active as a director of various other companies - Limbs and Things (medical models), Advantage Tracking Services, and the Sullivan Group. He maintained a lively interest in technological advances and was involved in several companies in the digital field.
Tim was a member of Savannah Rotary Club (secretary), Executive Association of Savannah (past president and secretary), Madeira Club, Rumpsteak Club, Savannah Yacht Club, Savannah Harbor Golf Club, Razzle Dazzle Hunt Club, Governor of Clifton College (2000-) in Bristol, England. He was a lifelong tennis player who played for many teams. Tennis was one of the mainstays of his life. As a teen, he played at Jr. Wimbledon.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Polly, of 60 years, and their two children, Jennifer Knox (Colin) and Julian Cooper (Hali) and three special grandchildren, Natalie, Pierce and Alex. His weakness was his lovingly-spoiled Shih Tzus pups - Lulu, Pearl and Buffy Benson.
Tim and Polly are active members of the new Isle of Hope Historical Association working to protect our special area from losing its historic character and save old homes from demolition.
