The Reverend David Samuel Templeton, Jr., 74, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Margaret 'Maggie' Harris Lee, died Thursday evening, February 18, 2021, at Azalealand Nursing Home after a long struggle with Parkinson Disease and other neurological issues.
Born and raised in Clinton, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Dick and Marjorie Templeton. David graduated with a B.A. from Presbyterian College in 1967, where he left the legacy of being the original 'Blue Hoseman' mascot at sporting events. In 1971, he earned his M.Div. from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. Also in 1971, he was ordained into the Presbyterian Church. Later, in 1999, he became affiliated with the United Church of Christ out of a strong desire for social justice, always on the side of the less fortunate and disenfranchised.
After serving in church ministry for 6 years, David was called to Chaplaincy, where he embraced his role as a listener and counselor, specializing in drug and alcohol treatment. He was a Board Certified Chaplain, an active member of the Association of Professional Chaplains, and served in leadership roles within the National Organization. After a 40-year career as a health care chaplain, he retired in 2013. He last worked at Hospice Savannah.
Along with his dedication to his career, David was a lifelong learner and reader that found joy in traveling and hiking the mountains of North and South Carolina. He liked to play 'at' golf and loved watching sports, especially the Atlanta Braves. Most recently, he enjoyed attending the Senior Learning Center.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret 'Maggie' Harris Lee; two sons, David 'Dee' Templeton III and his wife, Heather, and Matthew Lindsay Templeton and his wife, Ginger; two step-sons, Benjamin Lee and Thomas Lee; four grandchildren, Ella Templeton, Sam Templeton IV, Lindsay Templeton, and Michael Templeton.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, March 11, 2021, at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The memorial service will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, March 11, 2021, in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by the Reverend Michael S. White. Interment will be private.
