The Reverend Jerry Lee Austin Roberson, 85, of Savannah and husband of Ovella Mae Booth Roberson for 64 years, died Sunday morning, January 8, 2017, at Candler Hospital.
Born in Tuckerman, Arkansas, he was a son of the late Reverend Robert Austin Roberson and the late Vennie Estella Davis Roberson. He was a member of Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church.
He served in the Texas National Guard. In 1952 he began his pastoral studies at Arlington Baptist Seminary in Arlington, Texas and continued his studies at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO. Through structured study, a master's degree equivalency was obtained. After several assignments he was called to pastor Calvary Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD from 1961-1968. This church was a thriving ministry with growth of over 300 members and hundreds of conversions to Christ. In 1968-1971 he was pastor of DeRenne Avenue Baptist Church and founded Fellowship Baptist Church in 1971 from which he retired in 1995 as Pastor Emeritus. His last pastorate grew from 21 to over 300 members. He spend one year at Maple Hill Baptist Church in Charleston, WV in 1972.
Rev. Roberson was instrumental in founding the Mid-Atlantic Baptist Bible Fellowship and was a member and past president of the Georgia Baptist Fellowship. He spoke at numerous churches and meetings on the east coast. His love of God and fellow man led many people to enter the ministry.
Surviving is one daughter, Mary R. Howell, MD (retired) and her husband, Freddie; their sons, Jonathan Paul Howell PhD and his wife, Jennifer; one great-granddaughter, Evelyn Ruth; and Jeremy Phillip Howell and his wife, Michelle; and two great-grandsons, Dawson Phillip and Cooper Jackson Howell.
Also one son, Louis Daniel Roberson (retired) and his wife, Kamee; their sons: Aaron Lee Roberson and Austin Daniel Roberson JD and his wife, Whitney.
In addition, surviving are three brothers: Edwin, Robert, and Delano; two sisters: Frances and Virginia; and thirteen nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Wednesday evening at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 1 o 'clock Thursday afternoon in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Robert H. Dimmitt. Interment will be in Hillcrest Abbey - West.
