Sybil Seligman Barnett, 95, of Savannah, Georgia and wife of 71 years of the late Herman Barnett, died Sunday evening, July 13, 2014, at Buckingham South and under the care of Hospice Savannah.
Born in Dublin, Georgia, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Barnett was the daughter of the late Nathan Seligman and the late Sara Markell Seligman. She moved to Savannah after World War II where she worked side by side with her husband in the family business, Barnett Wholesale Company which evolved into Barnett Educational Supplies on Congress Street in downtown Savannah.
She was a member of Congregation Bnai Brith Jacob, the JEA, and Hadassah. Mrs. Barnett was also a 25 year volunteer at Candler Hospital and was most proud of this distinction. The extended time she shared with her grandchildren was of great joy to her. She also had a special bond with many of her nieces and nephews who continued to phone and visit on a regular basis.
Surviving are one daughter, Janis Javetz and her husband Lee, of Savannah, Georgia; two sons, Gary Barnett, and his wife, Harriet, of Atlanta, Georgia and Rick Barnett of Savannah, Georgia; five grandchildren, Nanci (David) Aronstein, Leslie (Andrew) Walcoff, Jonathan Javetz, Karen (Steve) Denker and Scott Barnett; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.
The family will sit Shiva at 12 Wylly Island Drive from 1 until 5 P. M. and 7:45 until 9 P. M. Tuesday through Friday and again on Sunday.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at both Buckingham South and Hospice Savannah for all of their loving care and support.
