SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Sidney Erle Smith, 90, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Ruth Minick Smith, died Sunday morning, December 13, 2009, at Riverview Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Brooklet, Georgia, he was a son of the late Sidney J. Smith and the late Margaret Della Scott Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Temple Baptist Church and served in the United States Army Air Force as a Master Sergeant during World War II. He retired as a supply technician for the 117th Tactical Control Squadron of the Georgia Air National Guard. Mr. Smith later volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Smith.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Minick Smith of Savannah, Georgia; one daughter, Louise Sheaffer and her husband, Jimmy, of Bluffton, South Carolina; six grandchildren, Jessica Shultz, Heather Rhodes, Ericka Arnold, Kimberly Shires, Terri Donaldson and Billy Barrow and several great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 o'clock Thursday morning at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Steve S. Corley. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
