SFC John D. 'J. D.' Miller, United States Army (Ret.), 73, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Mary Wilkinson Miller, died Friday afternoon, July 22, 2016, at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Born in Gideon, Missouri, he was a son of the late Paul James Miller and the late Sarah Mae Davidson Miller. J. D. was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church. He retired from the United States Army as a Sergeant First Class after 22 years of service. J. D. later retired from the City of Savannah as Superintendent of the Water Department after 16 years. He was a member, former president and chaplain of the Savannah Chapter of Gideons International. J. D. loved his family, music, and fishing.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary Wilkinson Miller of Savannah, Georgia; two daughters, Anita Turner-Ayres and her husband, Mick, of Bluffton, South Carolina and Elaine Granado and her husband, Miguel, of Tucson, Arizona; one son, Ross Miller and his wife, Neecie, of Jacksonville, Florida; eleven grandchildren, Ashley Hutchinson, Dustin Hutchinson and his wife, Krystal, Cory Hobbs, Jeanette Miller, Shannan Miller, Joy Turner, Emily Ayres, Katherine Eichhorn and her husband, Nathaniel, Lydia Ayres, Jonathan Turner and Aaron Turner; six great-grandchildren, Cody Clarke, Myina Hutchinson, Addison Eichhorn, Casen Clarke, Azalyn Hutchinson and Alex Eichhorn; one sister, Shirley Petty-Viner; two brothers, Joe Miller and his wife, Doris, and Jim Miller and his wife, Delores; their very close friends, Jim and Wilma Shields and their daughter, who is also the Goddaughter of J. D. and Mary, Stacy Lanier and her husband, Emory.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Monday evening at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service, with full military honors, will be held at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning at First Freewill Baptist Church conducted by The Reverend Michael L. Locklear. Interment will be at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning in Beaufort National Cemetery.
