Selina LaBruce Johnson, 95, of Savannah, passed away on 3/29/2023, after a brief illness. Selina was born on May 1, 1927 to Elizabeth and George LaBruce in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Hugh Richard Johnson and by her son, George LaBruce Johnson. She is survived by her son, Richard (Margaret) Johnson and her daughter, Selina (Trey) Loughridge, her grandchildren Richard (Sarah) Blackmon Johnson, Selina (William) Elizabeth Tappmeyer, and Luke (Chloe) Loughridge, seven great grandchildren, and countless friends.
Selina dedicated her life to helping others. She spent two years, with her husband, as co-directors of St. Anne’s Mission Home for Convalescent and Chronically Ill Children. Most of these children resided in the home as a result of polio. She moved to Savannah in 1953 and began her nursing career at Candler Hospital as the emergency room charge nurse. Her 45 years in nursing included patient care, patient education, nursing education, public education, and industrial nursing.
Though nursing was always her calling, Selina found the last 25 years of her life to be incredibly rewarding. She, along with other volunteers from the congregation, began the Unseen Guest Program, a ministry of St. Thomas Church. During her time as the head of this program, she and the other members prepared, packaged, and delivered more than 120,000 meals to homebound AIDs patients in Chatham County.
Selina lived independently in her home for 65 years until 10 days before her death. This was made possible due to the family and friends who helped make sure her every need was met. She was more thankful for each and every person who helped her continue to stay in her home than she could have expressed.
A Memorial service of her wonderful life will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 4pm at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Isle of Hope in Savannah, GA with a Celebration of life to follow with food and refreshments.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to St. Thomas Episcopal Church for the Unseen Guests Ministry in her name.
