Sara Truluck (Dodenhoff) Hall, Hilton Head Island, SC
Sara Truluck Hall, 83, died peacefully on December 29, 2023 with her family by her
side. She was born on July 26, 1940 in Asheville, NC to Dr. Moultrie Hearst Truluck
and Anna Elizabeth (Raysor) Truluck.
Sara was valedictorian of her 1958 graduating class at St. Genevieve-of-the-Pines
Academy in Asheville, NC (now Carolina Day School). She went on to graduate from
Hollins College in Roanoke, VA in 1962. While at Hollins, Sara spent a year abroad in
Paris where she became fluent in French, attended the Sorbonne and traveled
throughout Europe, developing a lifelong love of travel.
Sara married Martin Hilsman Dodenhoff in 1963. In 1966, they moved to Lakewood,
OH. Sara had a brief career in banking before her daughters were born. She
volunteered for many organizations including the Lakewood Historical Society, the
Lakewood Garden Club, the Oldest Stone House, the Nicholson House, the Junior
League of Cleveland, the Hollins Alumnae Board, and many more. When her
daughters, Laura and Betsy, were older, Sara began a career in travel. She traveled all
over the world and loved planning trips for others.
Indomitable, generous, fun, smart, energetic, organized, attentive to the details, Sara
was always ready for a party. She loved planning all types of activities and had an
itinerary to go along with every occasion. She made the world around her run
smoothly so others could enjoy it. She loved to have a good time, especially if she was
the chairman of the committee that planned it!
In 2000, Sara decided she wanted to be closer to her family, so she moved to Hilton
Head Island, SC where she worked for Wachovia Securities. She loved her church, All
Saints Episcopal Church in Hilton Head, and was involved in many aspects of church
life. She was also active with the Junior League of Savannah/SC Low Country
Sustainers.
It was in Hilton Head that she met and married George Flory Hall, Jr. in 2009. Together,
they loved to entertain friends and travel. They spent many happy summers at their
home in Banner Elk, NC.
Sara loved travel, reading, walking, bible study, cooking, entertaining, but she
especially loved being with her friends and family.
Sara was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, George Hall. She is
survived by her daughters, Laura Dodenhoff Martin (Andy) of Concord, NC and
Elizabeth “Betsy” Cooledge Dodenhoff Howard (Scott) of Savannah, GA; her
grandsons: Grant Truluck Martin, Reed Lanam Martin, Robert Elder Howard and
William Cooledge Howard. She is also survived by her brothers Alan Truluck (Gayden),
Patrick Truluck, and Peter Truluck.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church on Saturday,
March 2, 2024 at 12 pm with a reception to follow in the Gordon Mann Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, 3001
Meeting Street, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.
