Ruth Naomi Swindell Thompson Smith, 98, of Savannah, Georgia, widow of Weymon A. Thompson who passed away in 1971 and George P. Smith who passed away in 2007, died Sunday morning, October 7, 2012, at Habersham House.
Born May, 1914 in Long County, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late John E. Swindell and the late Leslie Howard Swindell. Mrs. Smith, a member of Epworth United Methodist Church for sixty-five years, was the oldest living member of her beloved church. She was the store manager for Mangles Department Store for many years. Affectionately known as 'Nana' by all the family, Ruth was a loving and caring person who touched the hearts of everyone she met. She was a resident of Habersham House Senior Living for the past six years under the excellent supervision and loving care the Habersham House staff as well as the staff of Odyssey Hospice.
Surviving are her daughter, Margie Thompson West of Savannah, Georgia; her sons, Mitchell 'Mickey' L. Thompson and his wife, Corinne, of Sheldon, South Carolina and Gerald S. Smith of Savannah; three grandchildren, Mitchell L. Thompson, Jr. of Sheldon, South Carolina, Karen Ruth Cooley and her husband, Charles, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, David Alan West of Savannah, Georgia, and three great-grandchildren, Kiley Marie Bush, Samantha Adele Thompson and Mitchell L. Thompson III.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery.
