SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Ruth Hogan Nightingale, 90, died peacefully March 5, 2012 in her hometown of Savannah, Georgia. Born to Louisa Eugenia Petrinovich Hogan and Charles Drumgoule Hogan on December 31, 1921. She attended Pape School, graduated from Ashley Hall in 1940, and Skidmore College in 1944. Majoring in PE at Skidmore, she taught at the DuBarry Success School in New York after college. Her love of sports continued throughout her life as a golfer, boater, an avid equestrian and competing in Daffin Parks' Senior Tennis League well into her 60's. With equal enthusiasm, she supported the arts in Savannah, Historic Savannah, the Junior League and St. Johns Church. Known for her strong opinions and vibrant presence she often expressed how fortunate she was to have a life full of family, community and friends. Traveling abroad, Ruthie enjoyed friendships worldwide.
She was a member of the Oglethorpe Club and Savannah Yacht and Golf Clubs, the Everglades Club in Palm Beach, FL, and the Manalapan Club in Manalapan, FL; Ruthie also enjoyed her Bridge clubs, Chatter Club and other Women's organizations.
Ruth Nightingale was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Brailsford Troup Nightingale. She is survived by a son, Brailsford Troup Nightingale, Jr. and his wife, Alice, of Brunswick, GA and a daughter, Nina Nightingale Braziel and her husband, Farrell, of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren, Charles and Forrest Braziel, Brailsford and Louisa Nightingale. The family extends their warmest thanks to Willie Mae Brown for her dedicated years with the family, Spanish Oaks Retreat and Hospice for the love and care they provided and a particular thanks to Devon Gaudry, her God Daughter, for always being there.
A church service will be held Friday, March 9th, at 11:00 am at St. John's Church in Savannah with a reception to follow at the Green-Meldrim House. Afterwards, a short graveside service will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to "Friends of Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation", c/o The Nightingale Family, 309 River Ridge Road, Brunswick, GA 31523.
