Ruth Newsome Brannen died April 27, 2017, at the Savannah home in which she was born 93 years ago on July 23, 1923.
Her parents were Reuben Franklin Newsome and Loris Rimes Newsome. Ruth, her sister, Frances Newsome (Beetchy), her brothers, Jack Rimes Newsome, and Paul Eugene Newsome, grew up during Depression Days. They attended a one-room school on White Bluff Rd. Ruth's dad worked for the railroad at night and farmed during the day. While their mother and dad worked to provide for the family, Ruth and her siblings enjoyed a care-free life: swimming in the creek that ran along their property, crabbing, blackberry picking, cane grindings, picnics at Coffee Bluff, and ballgames with the neighborhood kids. Ruth and her brother Jack were very active in the Chatham Co. 4-H Club. Ruth won a contest for the 'Healthiest Girl of Chatham Co.' Ruth and Jack won an ice cream-making contest for Chatham Co. and were sent by train to San Francisco, CA to compete where they came in 2nd place. The central part of life for the Newsomes was White Bluff Presbyterian Church which was within walking distance. At the age of 17, Ruth married Earl C. Brannen. Ruth was a stay-at-home mom to Patty, Susan, and Frank. When 25 years of marriage ended in divorce, Ruth earned her LPN Degree from Memorial Hospital. She worked for several Savannah doctors and for the American Red Cross until retiring in 1988. Some of Ruth's happiest days were spent working for her friend, Dr. Martha C. Gordy at Modoc, SC near Clarks' Hill Lake. At the age of 93 Ruth knows that grace has brought her through 'Many dangers, toils, and snares and grace will lead her home.' Frank, Ruth's son, died at the age of 29. Susan Brannen Gibson, died of cancer. All of Ruth's siblings and their spouses, and most of her life-long friends have died. Ruth is loved by many people. She is known as Mom to Patty and Bill Brodmann. She is known as Granny to seven grandchildren: Laurie Korey, Chris and Josh Gibson, Brent Muggridge, Will and(Liz), Patrick and(Laura), Jonathan and(Natalie) Brodmann. She is known as Granny II to eleven great-grandchildren: Kirstie, William, Jack, Abigail, Emma, Sarah, Mary, Sean, Henry, Ben, and Lillian. Ruth has been a faithful member of Independent Presbyterian Church since 2002.
The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11 o'clock Monday morning at Independent Presbyterian Church conducted by The Reverend Ronald H. Parrish. The burial will be private.
