SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Rupert Seymour Heller, 84, of Savannah, Georgia, and husband of "Patsy" Frances Winders Heller, died Friday afternoon, June 8, 2012, at Candler Hospital.
Born in Savannah, Georgia on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1927, he was the son of the late Henry Bernard Heller and Doris Littman Heller. Mr. Heller was a member of Congregation Mickve Israel. He attended Savannah High School from 1943 until 1944 and then Benedictine Military School from 1944 until graduating in 1945. Mr. Heller was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army Medical Corps at the Tenth General Hospital in Manila, Philipines. He graduated from Armstrong Junior College, having received an associate degree in liberal arts. He continued his studies at Emory University from 1948 through 1949 and then at the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy from 1949 until graduating in 1952. Mr. Heller began his professional career in pharmacy with Walgreen's Drug Stores where he worked as both pharmacist and manager from 1952 until 1963. He worked as a district and regional manager for Elliot's Drug Stores from 1964 until 1969. In 1969, Mr. Heller opened Rupert Heller's Prescriptions, a business that would grow to eight locations and served thousands of Savannah residents. He sold his successful pharmacy chain in 1992 to Revco Drug Stores and worked as a professional pharmacy consultant for a three-year period, finally retiring in 1995. Upon retiring, he went fishing, where he earned and still retains several Landings at Skidaway Island angling records. Mr. Heller served on the board of Congregation Mickve Israel, the Savannah Better Business Bureau, and the Jewish Educational Alliance. Mr. Heller was an avid supporter of the United Jewish Appeal and the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy. He was a dedicated family man, an avid fisherman, and great joke teller. In addition to his parents, Mr. Heller was preceded in death by his brother, Haskell Milton Heller and infant daughter, Donna Heller.
Surviving are his wife,"Patsy" Frances Winders Heller of Savannah, Georgia; three daughters, Karen Griffith and her husband Carl, of Macon, Georgia, and Beth Heller Steinfeldt, and her husband, David, and Crystal Heller, all of Savannah; a son, Hank Heller and his wife, Meredith, of Savannah; seven grandchildren, Hayley Frances Mallary, Lila Blair Heller, Jacqueline Sherrill, Kate Tennesson, Ray Heller Steinfeldt, Rebecca Doris Steinfeldt, and Rachel Danielle Steinfeldt; one niece, Laurie Heller, and one nephew, Ed Heller, and his wife, Beth.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Brad Bloom.
The family will be sitting Shiva from 2 until 7 o'clock on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at their home - 3 Ogeechee Ferry Lane, Savannah, Georgia, 31411 (The Landings).
