Rufus Frederick Newsome, Jr., 96, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Anne Lacelle Chastain Newsome, passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 15, 2022, at his home.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, he was a son of the late Rufus Frederick Newsome, Sr. and the late Frankie Mae Cabaniss Newsome. A graduate of Commercial High School, he later served in the United States Army during WWII. Rufus worked for many years as a welder and designer. He was a Freemason, a member of Ardsley Park Baptist Church and Central Baptist Church, the American Legion. Mechanically inclined, Rufus loved to tinker and weld, creating many artistic creations.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Shirley Roper and Debbie Floyd Newsome; four sisters, Mary Alsten Johnson, Elaine Fasick, Betty Orvin and Jeane Garret, and a brother, Tommy Edison Newsome.
Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Anne Lacelle Chastain Newsome; a son, Jeffry D. Newsome; grandchildren, April Page (Zach), Kyle Jordan Newsome, Ciara Pope (Anderson); great-grandchildren, Julia Page, Piper Page and Eli Pope; a sister, Marise Giles; son-in-law, Lynn Floyd, and his two daughters, Beth Ann and Jane.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Monday evening, March 21, 2022, at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will take place at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, March 22, 2022, in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service, conducted by the Reverend Kenneth L. Harrelson. Interment will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
