Ronald H. Cohen

October 27, 1935 — February 5, 2024

Ronald H. Cohen, 88, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2024, with his wife Mary by his side in their home.

Born October 27, 1935, in Alma, Georgia, Ronnie was the son of Nathan Cohen and Rebecca Chernoff Cohen. Ronnie was raised in Alma but spent long, happy summers in Savannah and at Tybee with his many Chernoff and Javetz cousins. Ronnie attended high school at Riverside Preparatory Academy in Gainesville, and attended the University of Georgia where he earned a BBA in 1958 and a J.D. in 1961 and became die-hard Georgia Bulldog football fan.

Ronnie devoted his career to the practice of real estate law in Savannah where he worked in private practice for many years before eventually joining the law firm HunterMaclean in 1999 until he retired in 2006. He was a member of the Savannah and American Bar Associations, the State Bar of Georgia, the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and was admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court Bar in June 2008. He served as President of Temple Mickve Israel and dedicated 22 years as the Chairman of the Savannah Metropolitan Zoning Board of Appeals.

Ronnie had a passion for cooking and especially loved feeding small and large gatherings of friends and family. He collected cookbooks, spent hours searching for unique and new items in grocery store aisles, and was especially fond of buying small cooking appliances. One year he even bought a Ronco Set It and Forget Rotisserie oven for his entire Tybee dinner club. He may have best been known to downtown Savannahians for his daily 10,000+ step walks around downtown which continued until just recently. His favorite walks were with Mary in the quiet and beauty of Cape Cod where they spent 6 weeks every summer and he delighted in cooking fresh seafood from the area.

Ronnie is survived by his wife Mary K. Cohen, his three children Dr. Rodney Cohen (Michelle) of Savannah, Rebecca Cohen Jacobson of Columbia, SC, and Matthew Cohen of Jerusalem, Israel. He is also survived by brother Stevie Cohen of Atlanta, sister-in-law Carole Cohen, grandchildren Alex Cohen (Ana), Jake Cohen (Laura) and Hanna Jacobson, numerous nieces, nephews, and close cousins, and his bonus family of stepchildren Eli Karatassos (Suz), Theone Karatassos (Conan Lindsey), Zack Karatassos (Gillian) and step-grandchildren Alexa Dysch (Michael Shoemaker), Dani Dysch, Leonidas and Kostas Lindsey, Gabriella and Bianca Karatassos. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Jerald Cohen.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00am February 9 at Bonaventure Cemetery, and Shiva will be held February 11 at 1:00pm at the home of Dr. Rodney Cohen, 28 Tarrow Ridge Road, 31411. Remembrances can be made to the JEA Preschool Savannah or a charity of your choice.
