Richard 'Dick' Gardner Matthews, 82, of Savannah, Georgia, and husband of Patricia 'Pat' Parnell Matthews, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday morning, May 18, 2021, at Memorial University Medical Center.



Born in Columbia, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Oscar Adrian Matthews and the late Catherine Henderson Matthews. Dick served in the United States Navy. In 1962 he met Patricia, the love of his life, and they were married in September of 1963. He enjoyed golfing and being on the river fishing. Dick was a faithful member of Chapel-By-The- Sea Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and served as a trustee. Dick most enjoyed spending time with his family. He leaves a legacy as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be deeply missed.



Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Patricia 'Pat' Parnell Matthews; daughters, Leigh Powers (John), Kelly Childree (Kevin); grandchildren, Victoria Powers, Madison Cooper (Alex), Tucker Powers (Anna), Kip Powers, Matthew Childree (Delia); great-grandchild, Brooks Cooper and three sisters, Sandy Vedus, Lynn Leeb, Marti Crutcher (Charles).



The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 o'clock Friday morning, May 21, 2021, at the Chapel-By-The-Sea Baptist Church - 811 Butler Avenue, Tybee Island.



The funeral service will follow at 11 o'clock Friday morning, May 21, 2021, at the church, conducted by the Reverend David C. Laughner. Private interment will be held Monday, May 24, 2021, at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, South Carolina.
