Richard Morley Flanagan, 87, died on June 24, 2016 at Spanish Oaks Retreat and Hospice. He died on the 55th anniversary of his marriage to Lois.
Dick was born in 1929 in Chicago, IL, and spent his youth in Downers Grove, IL and Grosse Point, MI. After completion of high school, he attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1950 with a BA in Economics. Having been in the NROTC while at the U. of M., he was commissioned and went on active duty as the Korean War commenced. His military experience offered him the opportunity to see various parts of the world.
Having been discharged from the service, he began his business career. His last corporate job was seventeen years with Varityper in NJ. Following that, he worked for five years at USGA in Far Hills, NJ. This was an enjoyable 'full-time retirement' job, affording an easy transition to permanent retirement.
Dick had been a golfer since the age of ten. He enjoyed attending tournaments, watching golf on TV, but was happiest when he was on the course. His favorite golf companion was his son, Steve. He was delighted to live at The Landings where he continued to play golf and enjoyed the fellowship of many friends and neighbors. He was a member of the Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church and several local organizations.
The Richard M. Flanagan Preserve is located on North Captiva Island, FL. The site consists of eleven contiguous lots donated to the Calusa Land Trust by Dick's oldest son, Eric.
Dick is survived by his wife, Lois; two sons, Eric (Kit) and Steven (Patsy); granddaughters, Riley, Lola and Ruby; a brother-in-law, George (Maureen); a sister-in-law, Anne, and several nieces and nephews.
The family expresses their appreciation to the Staff at Spanish Oaks Retreat and Hospice, including Tonja McLeod, Ashlee Griffin, Lori Shindell and Drew Corbett.
Visitation will be at the Flanagan's home from 4 until 6 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, July 5th.
A memorial service will be held at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, July 6th, at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church.
