Richard Dale Barnum (Dick) age 80 passed away at his home in Savannah, GA with his loving wife and his daughters by his side.
Dick was born and raised in Lakewood, Ohio by loving parents who recognized and encouraged his athletic abilities from an early age through his high school years. He excelled in baseball, football, and basketball and for pleasure loved to ice skate. After graduating from Lakewood High School, in 1962, Dick received many recruiting offers for professional baseball. He decided, however, to attend Miami University of Ohio on a football scholarship. His athletic achievements were further recognized in 2009 when he was inducted into the Lakewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
After college, Dick began a sales career in the lighting industry; and in 1967 he and Sande were married. They moved to Bay Village Ohio where they started a family with the birth of their two daughters. A new job moved Dick and his young family to Maple Glen, PA, where they lived for 36 years. Dick finished his successful business career in PA as the vice president of sales and marketing for Hanover Lantern. Upon retirement Dick and Sande moved to Savannah GA.
Dick loved the sun and spending time outdoors. He could often be found by the pool with family and friends, at the beach or on the golf course. He enjoyed all aspects of sports, coaching his daughter’s softball teams, attending his children’s and grandchildren’s competitions, analyzing quality coaching of other sports teams along with his own competing. He loved camaraderie, never turning down an opportunity for friendly competition on the golf course with friends and family. His love of sports was a way of life.
Dick was a devoted husband of 57 years, loving father, grandfather, and loyal friend. He was a man of character and quiet strength persevering through many health challenges. He was generous and selfless, putting others’ needs before his own. He led with his heart, embracing every moment of life. Always humble, always grateful, his greatest joy in life was his family.
Dick was preceded in death by his father Frank Woodruff Barnum, his mother Myrtle Whiteside Barnum and his brother William Whiteside Barnum.
He is survived by his loving wife Sandra (Sande), his two daughters Susan and her husband Michael Lukac, Stephanie and her husband Sean Cattie. He is also survived by his grandchildren Colleen Rothfus, Collin, Sean (Riley), and Erin Cattie; and many other family members, Dick will be greatly missed by his loving family, friends and grand pets.
