Phyllis Meddin Fields

d. September 24, 2016

Phyllis Meddin Fields, 92, passed away September 24, 2016, at her daughter Jeannie\'s home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

She was born in Savannah, Georgia to the late Alexander and Sadye Steinberg Meddin. Phyllis graduated from Savannah High School and attended Armstrong Jr. College. While studying at the University Hospital of Nursing in Augusta, she met Army Captain Maurice Fields, who was stationed in Augusta prior to being shipped overseas. They married shortly after his return from the Philippines on November 21, 1945.

After living in New York, where Dr. Fields was a dentist, Phyllis encouraged him to set up practice in Savannah, where they would make their home and raise their family.

Phyllis was a devoted wife and mother, often volunteering at her children's schools and as a Girl Scout leader. She loved nature and left behind a bird identification book with the date of each new bird she encountered. Phyllis loved playing Mahjong, reading books in a sunny spot, and passed on to her children a love of thunderstorms, lifelong learning, and strong ties to her beloved Savannah.

She was also a wonderful storyteller who enjoyed regaling her family, friends and sitters with stories of her carefree childhood and her excursions along the Back River at Tybee.

Phyllis was a lifelong member of Congregation Mickve Israel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a sister, Adele Meddin Schneider.

Survivors include three children, Doris (Alan) Blum of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Robert

(Robyn) Fields of South Salem, New York, and Jean (Doug) Holstein of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her brother, David Meddin, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning, September 27, 2016, at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Robert W. Haas.

The family would like to thank her special friend, Priscila Collins, and her many care givers who often enjoyed tea parties at 3 A. M. with Phyllis and made her last days happy ones.
