Philip (Sonny) Scharf, 86, died on September 30, 2012 at St Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ while visiting family.
He was born on the Lower East Side of New York City on March 30, 1926 and moved to Savannah in 1972. ??After graduating from Seward Park High School, Phil joined the Army and proudly served his country during WWII in Japan and the Philippines, earning a rank of Staff Sargent. He was awarded the Army of Occupation medal, Good Conduct medal, Philippines Liberation ribbon, World War II Victory medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal. Following his service, he attended the University of Wisconsin and Bergen Junior College. He worked in the dental supply and equipment field, designing and installing numerous dental offices in both New York and Savannah for over 35 years. Prior to moving to Savannah, Phil volunteered as equipment manager at the Fresh Meadows Athletic Association in the Little League program. Phil was active as a volunteer and member at the Jewish Education Alliance where his numerous talents were utilized cooking at the Men's Club meetings, constructing play equipment for the children's programs, and serving on various committees.?? He was a member of the BB Jacob Synagogue and a long term volunteer at the V.A. clinic working in the physical therapy department.?? Several years ago, Phil took a part time job at Welsh Pawn Shop, where he became an integral member of the team. He loved playing golf, watching all sports, taking cruises, playing cards and casino games, telling stories about growing up on the Lower East Side, and enjoying life to the fullest.
He is predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Evelyn and four older sisters, and is survived by his daughters Ellen Hagan (Jeff) of Savannah and Susan Nissim (Jules) of West Orange, NJ; his son Paul Scharf (Julie) of Charlotte, NC; his sister-in-law and brother-in law Lee and George Burnett of Walnut Creek, Ca; his grandchildren: Lainie and Emily Nissim, Allison Hagan, Jack and Brad Scharf; his nephews Elliott Nachwalter and Ed Bloom, as well as other nieces and a nephew on the west coast.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday October 4th at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.
The family will observe Shiva at the home of Phil Scharf.
