Nicholas Peter Mastopoulos

Nicholas Peter Mastopoulos, 85, of Savannah, entered into eternal peace on July 17, 2020, after a short illness.



The son of a Greek immigrant, the late Peter John Mastopoulos and the late Florence Alberino Mastopoulos, Nick was born and lived his entire life in Savannah.?? After graduating from Savannah High School in 1954, he studied for a year at Armstrong Junior College before entering the United States Army.?? Upon honorable discharge, he worked for many years in a family business, The Bay Fish Company, and then went to work at Savannah Gas Company on Broughton Street.?? In 1995 he retired from the Gas Company after 25 years and was simultaneously enlisted in the Georgia Army National Guard. After twenty years of service and with several commendations, he retired as a supply staff sergeant after 20 years of service and having received several commendations.



Nick was fully engaged at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church where he served on the Church council as a member, vice-president, and president and played softball and coached basketball. ??For many years he also co-chaired the St. Paul's Catering Committee with his late brother George and for more than a decade managed the bakaliko (grocery store) at the Savannah Greek Festival with his wife, Evangeline.?? An icon of St. Nicholas, Medal of St. Paul, and St. Paul's Day Award were bestowed upon him for his tireless service to his church and living his faith.?? Over the years he was an involved member of various military related groups and organizations including The First Volunteer Regiment of Georgia, where he served as president, Chatham Artillery, Republican Blues, Irish Jasper Greens, and American Legion Post 184.?? Additionally, he was active in the Savannah High School Alumni COBRA Club and the Savannah Old Timers Softball Club.?? He was a Boy Scout leader for more than 40 years and was recognized with the Prophet Elias and the Celtic Cross Religious Awards, Silver Beaver, Vigil Honor, District Award of Merit and numerous other distinctions.?? Many young men advanced to the rank of Eagle Scouts under Nick's solid leadership.



He was pre-deceased by the girl he took to her senior prom and later became his loving wife of 50 years, Evangeline Constantine Mastopoulos, for whom he became an indefatigable caregiver during her latter years.?? His sisters, Augusta F. Mastopoulos, Mary M. Smarr, and Emily M. Bry along with his brothers, John P. Mastopoulos and George P. Mastopoulos, also pre-deceased him.



He is survived by his devoted son, Dr. Peter N. Mastopoulos and many treasured nieces, nephews, friends, and healthcare providers.



Due to COVID pandemic restrictions, funeral services and interment will be private with Rev. Fr. John Wallace officiating and a letter of tribute read on behalf of The Very Rev. Archimandrite Fr. Frank M. Kirlangitis of Sarasota, Florida, and a special prayer offered by Rev. Dr. Samuel W. Watkins. ??The pallbearers will be Nick's grandnephews and great-grand nephews.
