SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Nicholas S. Kenny, Jr., 90, of Savannah, Georgia, died Tuesday afternoon, April 5, 2011, at Hospice Savannah.
Nick was born a native Savannahian on October 11, 1920 from the "Old Fort Irish". He was a parishioner of Cathedral of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He resided in Richmond Hill with his son Pat, Daisy, and Patrick for the last three years. Nick was a veteran of WWII, where he served in the Seabees Division of the United States Navy. He was a long standing member and Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 631, also serving at different State levels, and a member of The Immaculate Conception Assembly 173 4th Degree. Nick was Grand Marshal of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in 1978. He was co-founder and first President of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and a member of the Hibernian Society. Nick was also the founder and coordinator of the Parochial School Track and Field meet which was held in Savannah for many years. He was also the nephew of Savannah's famous "Waving Girl," Florence Martus.
Nick was married to Phyllis Edna Steeves Kenny for more than 50 years and had six children: Mary Frances Pacifici of Atlanta, Walter Joseph (Marilyn) of Guyton, Nicholas (Janice) of Savannah, Pat (Daisy) of Richmond Hill, Florence Groover (John), and Michael (Laura) of Savannah. He is also survived by his sister, Rose Mary Usher of Springfield, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 Thursday at Gamble Funeral Service with the Rosary service being held at 7 o'clock in the funeral home chapel conducted by The Reverend Patrick S. O'Brien.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 o'clock Friday morning in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist conducted by Monsignor William O. O'Neill. Private interment will be in the Catholic Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Patrick Kenny, Nicholas Kenny, and Robert Kenny, and nephews, Benny Usher, Timothy Usher, and Kenny Usher.
