Nesbert "Bo" Barnes

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Nesbert Asbury "Bo" Barnes, 81, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Louise Olliff Barnes and owner of Barnes Restaurants, died unexpectedly Friday afternoon, October 16, 2009, at his home.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, he was a son of the late Asbury Tillman Barnes and the late Vallie Brandt Barnes. Mr. Barnes was a lifelong and active member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church where he attended Sunday school and served as head usher. He volunteered for the United States Marine Corps Reserves and served in the United States Marine Corps Dog Company during the Korean War. Mr. Barnes retired from the Savannah Morning News after 22 years of service. In 1968, which was during his last year at the newspaper, he opened the Dairy Queen at Montgomery Street and Mills B. Lane and operated it until 1975. Mr. Barnes founded Barnes Restaurant in 1975 and owned and operated them until his death. He was a former member of Solomon's Lodge #1 A. & F. M. and the Alee Shrine Temple. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Valeria Rumary.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Louise Olliff Barnes of Savannah, Georgia; two sons, Alan Brandt Barnes and his wife, Cynthia Creighton-Jones, and Hugh Lange Barnes and his wife, Gretchen, all of Savannah, Georgia; one sister, Barbara Ann Tyson and her husband, Tim, of Savannah, Georgia; four grandchildren, Caroline, Douglas, Jack and William; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Tuesday at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church conducted by The Reverend Peter J. Hartmann. Interment, with full military honors, will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
