Nathaniel Judson McElveen, 85, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Elizabeth 'Betty' Driggers McElveen, died Tuesday morning, July 16, 2013, at Memorial University Medical Center.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, he was a son of the late Moses Judson McElveen and the late Sarah Louise Wilson McElveen. Mr. McElveen was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a United States Coast Guard veteran. Mr. McElveen retired as an engineer for CSX Railroad. He was a member of Zerubbabel Lodge #15 F & AM. Mr. McElveen volunteered for many years with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and was a member of the German Friendly Society. He loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time in the mountains of North Carolina. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Bobbie Harrison and Dorothy Hinely, and his sister and brothers-in-law, Lester Hayman and Emma and Ira Futrell.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth 'Betty' Driggers McElveen of Savannah, Georgia; one daughter, Margaret Lynn McElveen Cooper of Savannah, Georgia; two sons, M. Neal McElveen and his wife, Karen, of Waxhaw, North Carolina and John Judson McElveen and his wife, Erika, of Grayson, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Kathleen Elizabeth McElveen, Kimberly Lee Bryce and her husband, Christopher, Sarah Louise McElveen, Rebecca Elizabeth Cooper, James Judson Cooper, Josie Helen McElveen and Mac Loren McElveen; one great-grandson, Conor Nathaniel Bryce; four sisters, Ann Milton and her husband, Inman, of Rincon, Georgia, Margie Robbins and her husband, Weldon, of Savannah, Georgia, Sandra Polk and her husband, Phillip, of Edisto Beach, South Carolina and Janice McElveen of Savannah, Georgia; one brother, James Lowell McElveen and his wife, Aggie, of Florissant, Colorado; his sister-in-law, Margaret Hayman of Savannah, Georgia, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Thursday at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church conducted by The Reverend Peter J. Hartmann. Interment will be in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park - East.
