Nancy Mercer Keith Gerard, of Savannah, Georgia and wife of Stephen S. Gerard, passed away at Hospice Savannah on May 10th with her loving husband of 44 years at her side.



She was born on Christmas Eve, 1940, to Juliana Mercer Keith and Henry Gilbert Keith, their only child. She descended from a long line of distinguished Mercers going back to General Hugh Mercer, Surgeon General of the American Revolution, as well as Confederate General Hugh Mercer.



Nancy was a communicant of the historic Christ Church Episcopal on Johnson Square, where she and her husband Steve sang in the choir. She was very active in civic and community affairs and, in honor of her late cherished and beloved uncle, was one of the members of the Friends of Johnny Mercer, Inc. Nancy was instrumental in the creation and placement of the statue of Johnny Mercer in Ellis Square, as well as the historic marker in front of her and 'Uncle Bubba's' childhood home.



She is survived by her devoted husband and best friend, Stephen S. Gerard; her daughter and son-in-law, Lillian and Trevor Welch of Maplewood, New Jersey; her sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen H. and Meaghan Gerard of Savannah, Robert Mercer Gerard of Savannah, and David and Andrea Schools of Sebastopol, California; her beloved granddaughters, Isabelle, Sofia and Olivia Welch; her sisters and brothers, Dorothy and James Stevenson, Robert and Dawn Keith, Mardi Johnson and Susan and Hank Edwards, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her first cousins, Jeff Mercer and Amanda Mercer Neder, as well as Amanda's sons, Jamie and John. Nancy enjoyed all of her cousins, including the Hammonds, the Bunkers, the O'Leary's, the Missroons and the Ciucevichs.



The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the historic Christ Church Episcopal on Johnson Square conducted by The Reverend Michael S. White. Interment will follow in the Mercer family plot at Bonaventure Cemetery.
