SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - MSgt Leron Lawrence Mitchell, Sr., U. S. Air Force (Ret.), 87, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Patsy Kicklighter Mitchell and widower of Doris Kennedy Mitchell, died Sunday afternoon, March 25, 2012, at Memorial University Medical Center.
Born in Hagan, Georgia, he was a son of the late Osby Brooks Mitchell and the late Ada Lannigan Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He retired after 24 years of service as a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force. While in the military, he served during World War II where he landed on Utah Beach and went 24 kilometers to Berlin. Mr. Mitchell was a devoted husband and father who loved his family and his animals. In addition to his wife of 66 years, he was preceded in death by his parents and by a son, Stevie Mitchell.
Surviving are his wife, Patsy Kicklighter Mitchell of Glennville and Savannah; two sons, Leron L. "Larry" Mitchell and his wife, Nancy, of Savannah, Georgia, and Rick Mitchell and his wife, Jeannie, of Ellabell, Georgia; five grandchildren, Lawrence Mitchell and his wife, Karyn, Jennifer M. Butler and her husband, Marsh, Ericka M. Jeffers and her husband, Eric, Zack Mitchell and Little Rick Mitchell; four great-grandchildren, Julian Mitchell, Lauren Mitchell, Marshall Butler III and Jenny Belle Butler; one great-great-granddaughter, Ava Grace Lane; one sister, Christine Ulmer of Savannah, Georgia; nephews including Greg and Keith Gladin and his wife, Pam; great-nieces and great-nephews including Sarah, Stephanie, Keith, Jr. and Christopher, and three great-great nieces.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Tuesday evening at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Michael T. Brown and The Reverend Dr. Morgan D. Kerr. Interment, with full military honors, will be at 12:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the Kennedy Cemetery at Rome Primitive Baptist Church near Reidsville.
