Moses Edward 'Ed' Abernathy, 94, of Savannah, Georgia and widower of Jane Butler Abernathy and Viola 'Vicky' Curry Abernathy, died Thursday afternoon, October 6, 2016, at NorthSpring Senior Living in Claxton, GA surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Maiden, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Daniel Abernathy and the late Viola Reel Abernathy. Mr. Abernathy was a communicant of both St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran having served 12 years in First Marine Division, Dog Company, 10th Infantry Battalion USMCR. During World War II he served in combat campaigns at Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Palau, New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Cape Gloucester, New Britain. He also served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Abernathy retired from AT&T (formerly Southern Bell) after 30 years as an installer and repairman. He was a life member of the Marine Corps League. Mr. Abernathy enjoyed growing vegetables, flowers, and fishing.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Ann Aliffi (Don) of Claxton; one son, Thomas E. 'Tommy' Abernathy (Teresa) of Savannah; one stepson, Michael Curry (Edice) of Tifton, Ga; five grandchildren, Jenny Aliffi Maddi (Doug), Heather Abernathy Hurst (Clay), Sarah Aliffi-Baez (Ian), Jessica Aliffi Green (B. J.), and Miranda Keller Johanson (Kiel); eleven great-grandchildren, Tripp & Viviann Green, Wills & Barrett Baez, Carlee Jane Hurst, Haven & Alaska Johanson, Caleb, Josuha, Aaron, and Sarah Curry, and one brother, Lewis Abernathy and his wife, Marvy, of Granite Falls, North Carolina.
The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 o'clock Friday at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church ' 11500 Middleground Road.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 o'clock Friday at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church conducted by The Reverend Richard Minch. Interment, with military honors, will be in the Catholic Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of Dog Company, Marine Corps League of Savannah, GA.
Active pallbearers will be Clay Hurst, Doug Maddi, Ian Baez, B. J. Green, Sheriff John Wilcher and Ernie Reynolds.
