Mildred Lamm Gay, 93, of Savannah, Georgia, wife of the late Benjamin Earl Gay, died Saturday, September 30, 2017, after a short illness.
She is preceded in death by her parents George and Lovie W. Lamm and her brother Ray Lamm, all of Wilson, NC.
Mildred and Earl (his childhood name) friends since elementary school eloped in 1945 before his deployment to the Battle of the Bulge of WWII. She worked at Duke University and at the NC Department of Motor Vehicles after his return to support his NC State engineering degree. In 1951, employment at Union Bag brought them to Savannah. Fulfilling a dream, Mildred returned to school at the age of 45 earning a Master Cosmetology license which she kept active through the age of 85. She first worked in downtown Savannah making hand sewn male wigs for musicians before operating her own one person salon where she rescued many victims of homemade perms and hair coloring. Although less than 5\' tall, one could never miss her in a room. She became a second mom to many who met her and a friend for life. In addition, Mildred was a talented painter and artist.
Surviving are daughters, Georgia Carole Gay (Ronnie Joe Polatty of Greenwood, SC), Charlotte Gay Hinely (Mike Hinely) and Dodie Gay Eberlein (Bill Eberlein), all of the Savannah, GA area. Others include her sister, June Brinkman of Boone, NC and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Monday, visitation will begin at 10am followed by a memorial service at 11am conducted by The Reverend William E. Gardner in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service.
