Mildred “Kitty” Gray Thompson passed away peacefully at home on December 16, 2023 surrounded by her family. Kitty was born on September 30, 1932 to Alex and Frances Gray. She graduated from Commercial High School in 1950, where she cheered and played basketball. She married her high school sweetheart, Marion Edward Thompson Sr., by traveling to California on June 15, 1950 where he was stationed at the time. She loved her children and grandchildren more than life itself and was the absolute best Gaga (Gog) of all time.
Kitty was an active member at Southside Baptist Church for over 60 years and cherished her Sunday Class, all of whom were her spiritual support group. She was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 31 years and then Belk part time. Kitty loved being outdoors gardening and being on the water crabbing, fishing, and skiing when her health allowed. She was famous among her family and friends for her cooking, baking and crocheting. Her grandchildren always believed she had a magical oven where everything tasted better than anywhere else.She was a selfless, Christian mother who gave all of herself and taught her kids the importance of a Christian life and of giving back.
Kitty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Helen, and her sons Tommy Thompson and Timothy Thompson. She is survived by her children Gary Thompson and Kathryn DeLettre (Dewey), daughter-in-law Patti Thompson, and grandchildren Gray Thompson (Allison), Stephen Thompson (Catherine), Emily “Boo” Peters (Jason), Blake Olsen (Sarah), Briana Evans (Ian), Ryan DeLettre (Jennifer), Taylor DeLettre, and 7 great grandchildren.
The service will be held at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah, GA 31405 on Friday, December 22, 2023 at 12:00 PM. Visitation will be from 11:00-12:00. The family would like to extend a special thank you to her Win Some Sunday School class, Faye Allen, and Hospice of Savannah. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Hospice of Savannah.
