Michael Devoe

Michael Devoe was born on December 19,1964 in Savannah, Georgia. He went on to be with the Lord on May 27, 2020.



At an early age, Michael was an astute learner. He was adept at taking an in-depth approach to learning that requires introspection and critical analysis. Michael Devoe loved to engage in in-depth conversations. Some of his memorable conversations included the advancement of African-Americans. He examined the intersection of race, class, and gender, and how we can build our communities through shifting our mindset, our financial prowess, and by being a self-learner who takes ownership of our knowledge. Michael Devoe was a realist, who saw people for who they are and was not afraid to state inconsistencies he observed. He was a seeker of truth as he believed the more we engage with the truth, the freer we can be.



Michael was a loving, caring, calm spirit, and humble person. Michael was sweet and gentle with everyone he encountered. Michael was always there for others at any given time. He loved the element of surprised as he helped and loved to make people smile. He was an active listener and made everyone he talked to feel heard. While he was a natural giver, and he was able to gently assert his boundaries when necessary. He loved peace and was able to distance himself from pretension.



He attended Jenkins High School in Savannah, Georgia. He turned a love for driving into a career. He later obtained his CDL at United Truck Master Trucking School in Clearwater, FL. Michael worked in the Trucking Industry for more than 20 years. He did not let school get in the way of his education. He continued to be an avid seeker of knowledge and kept up with health news and economics. Before Michael passed away, he expressed wanting to transition out of the trucking industry and transition into teaching others. He obtained a position where he would be able to give back as a Commercial Driver Instructor. Although Michael's time with us was cut short, he will always be remembered for the lessons he taught to those who took the time to engage in a conversation with him. His legacy continues on with Diana Devoe-Bland, his son-in-law Cordell E. Bland, and two grandchildren, Xavier Hernandez and Della L. Bland.



Michael Devoe was preceded in death by his father, Henry Grant; maternal grandparents, Frank and Annie Mae Devoe; grandfather, Henry (Chinky) Grant III; and grandmother Addie B. Holmes.



Survivors include his mother, Glenda Williams; sisters, Donna Maloney and Delores Hull; step-sisters, Naliah Grant and Lashaon Lance; aunts, Gladys Holmes, Mayda Devoe, Ann Hall and Lamore Gray; uncles, Marion Devoe, Frank Devoe, Lamar Devoe, Algrier Devoe and Gerald Devoe; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.



With concern for the health and safety of family and friends, the memorial service will be limited to twenty-five close family members at 2 o'clock, Saturday afternoon, June 6, 2020 at the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service.



The family will receive friends, to be limited to ten people at a time, from 3 until 5 o'clock, Saturday afternoon, June 6, 2020.



Masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer will be provided.



The family requests that masks be worn and that those attending practice social distancing.
