Mavis 'Majo' Crumpton Hodges, 83, of Savannah, Georgia, died Monday afternoon, October 6, 2014, at Summer Breeze Senior Living on Wilmington Island.



She was born on March 12, 1931, in Bellville, Georgia. Majo was the eighth child of nine born to the late Elder A. R. Crumpton and the late Alma Mooney Crumpton. She grew up in Bellville and Claxton where she graduated high school in 1947.



In 1948, Majo married Willis Edwards Hodges of Claxton. She and Willis moved to Savannah in 1953, where they raised two daughters, Beth and Sue.



Majo was well known for her various talents and occupations. She was a bookkeeper for several businesses, swimming instructor at Daffin park pool, secretary at Charles Ellis School, caterer and wedding cake decorator, bridal shop owner and wedding dress seamstress, tax accountant and ceramics instructor. In their retirement she and Willis were designers of country crafts.



After Willis' death in 1996, Majo met and married Freddie Chapman. They enjoyed traveling and visiting with family during their eight years of marriage.



She grew up in the Primitive Baptist faith, attending churches in Savannah and traveling to rural churches where her father preached. She had close ties with the people in all the churches, and she loved her Lord. Later she attended and was a member of First Baptist Church of the Islands.



Throughout Majo's lifetime, she was a trusted friend and family member. All who knew her could depend on her help and generosity in any circumstance. She was dearly loved and will be truly missed.



In addition to both of her husbands and her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Eva Rogers and Alice Yardman, and four brothers, W. D. Crumpton, Pruet Crumpton, Waymond Crumpton and Sam Crumpton.



Surviving are two daughters, Beth Hodges and Doug Burford of Tybee Island, Georgia, and Sue Mathis and her husband, Wayne, of Savannah, Georgia; six grandchildren, James Swinney and Robin Cocuy, Will Swinney, Janie Peaster, Susan Morrison and her fianc??, Jon Burnett, Deena Britt and her husband, Matt, and Leslie Pitts and her husband, Brian; thirteen great-grandchildren, Daniel, Emma, Morgan, Wil, Leah, Jack, Raine, Ella, Libby, Luke, Graham, Fisher and Annalise; one sister, Doris Smith of Savannah, Georgia; one brother, Danny Crumpton and his wife, Charlene, of Warrenton, Georgia; a number of nieces and nephews, and the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of her late husband, Freddie Chapman.



The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 o\'clock Wednesday morning at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue.



The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend A. Brooks Cail. Interment will be at 1:15 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in Brewton Cemetery in Hagan.



Majo's family would like to express sincere appreciation to the staff at Summer Breeze and especially to her loving and caring caregivers on Rose Lane. Also, the family gives thanks to the special staff and volunteers from Hospice Savannah.
