Mary Mccorkle Westberry

d. December 6, 2022

Mary Kathryn McCorkle Westberry, 78, of Savannah, Georgia, wife of James Ray Westberry, Jr., passed away Tuesday morning, December 6, 2022, at home.

Born in Claxton, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Carlie Simpson McCorkle and the late Katie Mae Fordham McCorkle.  Kathryn was the Homecoming Queen and graduated as Salutatorian at Claxton High School in 1962.  She received her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia.  A brilliant pianist, one of her many musical accomplishments was her ability to play the entire 27 pages of Rhapsody in Blue flawlessly from memory.  After obtaining her degree, she taught music education in Atlanta public schools and at Meyers Middle School in Savannah, Georgia.  She later opened her own business, teaching private piano lessons for nearly 20 years.  Kathryn was a deeply devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  She was a force to be reckoned with as concerns her family.  Most importantly, Kathryn was a devoutly caring Christian soul who would do anything to allow righteousness to persevere. She was a member of the Windsor Forest Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Richard Carlyle McCorkle.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, James Ray Westberry, Jr.; children James Parker Westberry, M.D. (Phatama Padavanija, M.D.), Kenneth "Ken" Raymond Westberry, Kathryn "Katy" Ann Meadows, Esq. (Brad); grandchildren Julia Westberry and Daniel Meadows; her sister, Winselle Yvonne Hearn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would especially like to express their appreciation to her son, Ken Westberry, for being her abiding caregiver for the past 7 years.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at Gamble Funeral Home, located at 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah, Georgia 31405.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, December 12, 2022 in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Home, conducted by the Reverend Mark Gentry of Windsor Forest Baptist Church.  Interment will follow at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park East, 1600 Wheaton Street, Savannah, Georgia 31404.

Remembrances:  St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105-1905.
