Mary Mattingly Monohan Laidlaw (Mary Matt), 82, previously of Hilton Head Island, SC., passed away peacefully Friday, February 10, 2023, at Spanish Oaks Retreat in Savannah, GA under the wonderful care of Hospice.
Mary Matt was born July 2, 1940, in Louisville, KY. She was a 1958 Graduate of Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville and attended Ursuline College until she met and fell madly in love with William (Bill) Laidlaw, while he was stationed at Fort Knox, KY. They married on June 11, 1960. The couple moved to Hilton Head Island, SC from Charlotte, NC in 1979 and owned Mary Matt, Inc., a custom drapery workroom, until retiring in 2005. Mary Matt’s artistic talents graced many a home in the low country.
She enjoyed a lifetime friendship with her “gang of trouble” from Ursuline. Mary Lynne, Sharon, Donna, Jayne, Samra, and Ann. Mary Matt loved a good cup of coffee and nothing in her bourbon.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Bill Laidlaw, her parents, John and Katherine Monohan, Jr., her brother Stephen Monohan of Louisville, KY and a son, Gregory Laidlaw.
She is survived by two brothers, John Monohan III (Jack and Marilyn) of Louisville, KY; Douglas Monohan (Margo) of Gainesville, GA; in-law siblings, John and MaryAnn Laidlaw of Syracuse, NY, and Nancy Laidlaw Rathbun of San Diego, CA; three children, Sara Laidlaw Woodruff (Mark), Martha Kay Laidlaw Pollex (Eric Koerner) and Stephen D. Laidlaw (Beth); a beloved granddaughter, Amber Boulware (Troy), great granddaughter Kathryn Boulware; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was cared for by Gloria Alexander and others with love for many years.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, February 23, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Savannah, GA.
Interment will follow at a later date at the Beaufort National Cemetery.
