Mary Elizabeth Bullock Demere, 95, of Savannah, Georgia, wife of Robert Houstoun Demere, Sr., died at her home surrounded by her loving children on June 13, 2023.
Born September 2, 1927 she was the daughter of the late Edward Taylor Bullock and Mary Elizabeth deWyche Bullock. Raised in Bronxville, New York, she attended Bronxville High School and spent her summers on Nantucket. She proceeded on to college at Parsons School of Design in New York City and during WWII, she met the love of her life, Robert (Bobby) H. Demere, Sr. in Grand Central Station. They were married in Christ Church in Bronxville, New York, September 21, 1946, and shortly thereafter moved to their home in Savannah where she and Bobby were married for 57 years.
Mary was an avid donor to numerous charities close to her heart, a member of many societies and clubs she cherished, to include: Savannah Junior League, The Women’s Board of Bethesda, The Savannah Garden Club, The Married Woman’s Card Club, and The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Savannah and the Church of the Incarnation in Highlands, North Carolina where she spent her summers. She deeply loved her family and God, was well traveled, known as the ultimate hostess, enjoyed sailing with her husband, gardening, dancing the Jitterbug, and had an immeasurable love for animals, and was even known to be able to talk to bears!
Proceeded in her death are her parents Edward and Mary Elizabeth Bullock, her brother George Edward Bullock, her husband Robert H. Demere, Sr, her son Raymond S. Demere, Sr. Surviving are her three sons and daughter with their spouses; Rob and Celeste Demere, John and Patty Demere, daughter-in-law Martha Demere, Sims Demere, Anne and Dale Hendrix, Jr. She had 17 grandchildren; Elizabeth Froleich, Houstoun and Allison Demere, Anne Demere, Christian and Maddie Demere, Katie Demere, Alison and Randy Brunson, Michelle Demere, Josi Demere, Bullock Demere, Raymond Demere, Mary Demere, Harry and Ginger Demere, Kathleen Booker, Lindsey and Adam Herndon, Demi and Bo Blythe, Chase Meeker, and Maggie Hendrix. She was also blessed with 14 great-grandchildren!
The family would also like to give our heart-felt thanks to the many caregivers who Mary loved dearly including Rena Mae Frasier, Fred Ryan, Pearl Bolton, and Regina Mills.
The funeral will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Monday morning, June 19, 2023 at eleven o’clock conducted by Reverend Jonathan Jameson. A private burial for family and close friends will follow the service at the Demere Family Cemetery on Turners Rock.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests giving in Mary’s honor to St. John’s Episcopal Church of Savannah, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or The Humane Society.
We will always remember Mary, Mom, Grandmother, Mema, Mamama for her compassionate, strong heart and beautiful smile that could light up any room.
