SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Mary Ellen Prendergast Brennan, 85, of Savannah, Georgia, wife of Dr. Carl Brennan, died Monday morning, April 11, 2011, at Savannah Square after a long illness.
She was the daughter of Mary Conley Prendergast and Eugene C. Prendergast. Born and raised in Savannah, Mary attended Sacred Heart School and Church and graduated from Savannah High School and St. Rose College in Albany, New York. She met her future husband, Carl H. Brennan, in Savannah in 1944, while his air group was training at the old Travis Field during World War II. Following the war, Mary and Carl were married while he attended Cornell Medical College in New York City. Some of Mary's happiest memories were living in New York during that time, in a 5-story walk-up; cold-water flat, while she worked and he completed his education. After New York, Mary and Carl moved to Baltimore for Carl's residency at Johns Hopkins Pediatric Hospital. Their first son, Thomas, was born in Baltimore during this time, followed by their second son, Mark, in Savannah, where Dr. Brennan was by then in practice. Mary was a full time homemaker and a daily communicant of St. James Catholic Church until her illness.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dr. Carl Brennan; two sons, Mark Brennan and Thomas Brennan and his wife, Vicki, and her beloved granddaughter, Elizabeth.
The family will have a private Funeral service and a public Memorial Mass will be announced at a later date.
The family wishes to thank Drs. Robert Grant, Frank LaFranchise, and Sidney Bolch for their years of her care. They also thank the staff at Savannah Square and at Hospice. Especial gratitude also to the Emergency and Nursing staffs at St. Joseph's Hospital for their excellent attention during many admissions. Additionally, the Pastoral personnel at St. Joseph's were of inestimable support.
