Martin (Marty) Allen Grossman, 77, died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Those who knew Marty know what a kind and generous man he was. He was an insatiable learner with a love for science, music (especially Jazz) and art. He wasn’t afraid of technology, always ready to help anyone who was having problems getting things to work or figuring out the best possible products to buy.
Marty was a New Yorker from the core and grew up in Manhattan and Queens, NY. He attended City College to study engineering for several years and then switched majors and schools and graduated from Bernard Baruch University with a degree in marketing. He married young and had two beautiful daughters. His first wife tragically died in a car accident in 1977 leaving him bereft and being a single parent of a 3 and 6 year-old. According to his daughters, Marty was the "girl-dad of all girl-dads,” always able to have the difficult conversations with incredible skill.
His intellect and versatility saw his career rise to senior leadership positions that spanned a variety of job titles and industries including Advertising, Marketing, Curriculum and Investor Relations in companies that handled record clubs, direct marketing services, insurance, children’s publishing and for-profit education. He was a mentor and leader who won the respect of those who worked with him and for him.
Marty met Sheila Bernstein in 1985 and knew he had found his soul mate. Marty proposed to Sheila saying that if she married him, she would never be bored. They were married in 1988 and proceeded to make his prediction true when his jobs took him to Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Scranton PA, Redding CT and Indianapolis.
In 2005, Marty retired, and he and Sheila moved to The Landings in Savannah, Georgia. He loved being retired and the life on this beautiful island. It also gave him the time to travel extensively with his wife, children and grandchildren. Some of their favorite trips together were to the Galapagos Islands, Alaska, Israel and to London and Paris.
Since they met in 1985, Marty and Sheila have been inseparable. They rarely traveled without each other and spent much of their time enjoying their family and the life they built together. His passing has left an enormous void in the lives of those who loved him and he will be in our hearts forever.
Marty was predeceased by his parents, Philip and Sylvia Grossman, his sister Lydia, and his first wife SueBeth. He is survived by his wife Sheila, his daughters Erin and Lissa, his son-in-law Walker, and his granddaughters Abigail and Hannah.
