Marilyn Beskie Schneider was born in Whiteville, NC on July 23rd, 1943 to Edward J. and Rose M.Beskie, a linguist who would often work helping immigrants acclimate to the United States. Marilyn grew up deeply influenced by her mother's charitable and giving demeanor.
Subsequent to her mother's passing, Marilyn moved to Charlotte, NC in 1962, where she worked as an administrative assistant while attending Charlotte College. It was in Charlotte, at the end of that year, that she met her beloved husband of 50 years, Stephen Schneider- literally bumping into him on the way out of the office. They dated for 5 years and married in 1967.
In 1969, came their first child, Michael, and in 1970, Marilyn and Steve moved back to Steve's hometown, Savannah Ga to be with family while expecting their second child, Stacy.
Marilyn spent the next several years raising her growing family and operating a ladies clothing boutique on Broughton Street. Baby Rose came along in 1977 and in 1982 the family moved to Atlanta, Ga for 2 years.
Having adopted Savannah as her home, Marilyn insisted on returning there. In Savannah, she was an active member of the B'nai Brith Jacob synagogue, an avid gardener and was continually honing her skills as a gourmet chef.
After the older children left the house an opportunity arose in St. Louis where the family lived from 1990 until 2000. During that time, Marilyn was recruited to manage The Roasting House, a gourmet food and wine shop that unknowingly became the model for a small business she would later open with her husband. Her culinary expertise grew bounds in this time and she became known for her refined style and gracious hospitality. She enjoyed cooking and creating elaborate meals for friends and family, serving, humbly, as the primary underpinning for connection and gathering.
Missing the south dearly, Marilyn and Steve eventually made their way back to Atlanta for a few years before returning to Savannah full time with residences in both Tybee & Skidaway Islands. Marilyn loved the beach and was so much at home in Savannah.
In these later Savannah years, she devoted her time to work with Bnos Chesed Hebrew Burial Society at the BB Jacob Synagogue. She enjoyed reconnecting with friends and family, hosting countless holiday feasts and celebrations. In 2003, she and her husband opened 'We're Nuts Wine & Cheese' which they operated until her illness became more apparent. Marilyn was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2012 and passed away peacefully the evening of October 14th, 2017. She was a beautiful person, inside and out and is survived by her many friends, brothers Dennis and Howard (Tina) Beskie, son Michael Schneider (Lisa Kornylak), daughter and son-in-law, Stacy (Adam Ritchie), daughter Rose Schneider and her devoted husband, Stephen Schneider.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at The Manor House and also to Kindred Hospice for their compassion and care.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.
