Margaret Gearldine Smith, 80, of Savannah, Georgia, died Friday morning, September 6, 2013, at Hospice Savannah.
Born in Willie, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late W.D. Smith and the late Mamie Elizabeth Clark Brown. She grew up in Savannah and worked for forty years for Coastal Center for Developmental Services , the former Chatham Association for Retarded Citizens.
Surviving are her 'adoptive' parents, Anne and Rufus Newsome and 'adopted' brother, Jeff Newsome. Nephews Shelley Smith, Jr and Rene Diaz; niece Cynthia Diaz and her loving sister in law, Mary. Gearldine will be missed by her many cousins who loved her greatly and cherish forever the memory of the simple, child-like unconditional love that she offered to us all.
She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Shelley Smith, Sr. and her lifelong best friend, Shirley Roper.
The family will receive friends from 11 until 1 o'clock Monday at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service. Interment will follow in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Azalealand Nursing Home and the nurses at Hospice Savannah.
