SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Margaret "Margie" Hunter Smith, 85, of Savannah, Georgia, widow of Lonnie D. Smith, Jr., died Wednesday morning, August 10, 2011, at Hospice Atlanta.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Frank Naylor Hunter and the late Renetta Frances Pittman Hunter. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Commercial High School and retired from Savannah Electric and Power Company after forty years of service as Executive Secretary. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Alee Temple Shrine Women's Auxiliary where their main project was to do work for the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital. She was also a member of the Ambassadors Chapter of Georgia Power Company in Savannah and the Retired Ladies Group of Savannah Electric and Power Company. After a day's work at her regular job, Margie was a volunteer at Candler General Hospital until she had to stop due to health issues. She and her late husband enjoyed being members of The Savannah Yacht and Country Club where she was a "Preferred Member". Margie was a long-time member of Central Christian church and the Adult Service Sunday School Class. Most recently she has been attending South Gardens Christian Church. She was a lady full of sweet genuine love and was very highly respected and her greatest and most used gift was the gift of helping others. In addition to her parents, Margie was preceded in death by her husband of thirty eight years.
Surviving are one nephew, Frank J. Cobia and his wife, Carol, of Florence, South Carolina; one niece, Alice Renetta Thigpen of Atlanta, Georgia; one grandnephew, Frank Naylor Cobia and his wife, Yuri, of Atlanta, Georgia; one grandniece, Kim Johnson and her husband, Michael, of Carolina Beach, North Carolina; one great-grandniece, Hana Elizabeth Cobia and two great- grandnephews, Hunter Riki Cobia and Cooper James Johnson.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Friday evening at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The Funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by Pastor Steven R. Helmly and Minister Robert Jones. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
