Margaret “Peggy” McBrier Keisker Gunn died on August 16, 2022 in Savannah, Georgia.
She was born in Savannah to the late Jane McBrier Keisker and Alonzo Phelps Keisker. She was predeceased by her siblings: James Keisker, Betty Jane Keisker Losche, and Joy Keisker Maner; and by nephews Carl Losche and Gary Losche.
Peggy grew up on 46th Street in Ardsley Park and attended Charles Ellis School and Pape School. She graduated from Principia School in St. Louis, Missouri in 1948, and Principia College in 1952 with a degree in Art History. With her former husband, the late Robert D. Gunn, she had two children: Robin Wright Gunn of Savannah, and Errett “Rett” Alonzo Gunn of Atlanta. She served as a Girl Scout leader and participated in many civic activities including the Junior League, the Girl Scout Council of Savannah, the Savannah Symphony Women’s Guild, and the Telfair Academy board. She was involved in the founding of the Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home and was an early board member. She was the first woman to serve as chair of the Salvation Army board in Savannah.
For 25 years Peggy was a licensed real estate agent with Courington Realty. In the late 1980s she launched the Savannah chapter of the League of Junior Cotillions, teaching ballroom dance and etiquette to young people for 10 years. As a free-lance writer she wrote articles for many local and regional publications, and for the Christian Science Monitor.
A lifelong athlete, Peggy was a tennis player from her teens through her early 80s. At her Wilmington Island home on Turners Creek, she swam at high tide every summer day for decades. She water-skied and snow-skied and made sure her children learned both. In her 60s she took up yoga, and could be found at the Islands YMCA five days a week at either yoga or Pilates until she moved to Savannah Square in her late 80s.
Peggy loved art, music, theater, literature, history; and nurtured these interests by attending concerts and lectures, traveling, and taking courses at The Learning Center. She was a frequent contributor to the Savannah Morning News Letters to the Editor. She was interested in meeting new people and welcoming them into her life, while maintaining friendships from her Pape and Principia school days.
The foundation of Peggy’s life was her Christian Science faith, which she studied daily. She was a lifelong member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, Savannah, and of the Christian Science Mother Church in Boston, Massachusetts.
In addition to her children Peggy is survived by: her sister Betty Jane’s children (Page, Kerry, Rudy, Katy, Allison, Kendra); her sister Joy’s children (McBrier, Dee, Jane, Conrad, Bob, Ann) their spouses and children; and extended family Matthew Gunn and Heyward Gunn Kreutzer and their families. She enjoyed a special relationship with her oldest niece, Page McBrier Losche Morrison.
Peggy’s children are grateful to the staff and residents of Palmetto Inn at Savannah Square, for their friendship and care of Peggy since 2017; to the staff of Coastal Care Partners and Hospice Savannah; and especially to the congregation of Peggy’s church, for their steadfast prayer and love for her throughout her life.
