LTC John Wayne \"J. W.\" Mathis, U. S. Army (Ret.), 77, of Savannah, Georgia, died Monday, September 18, 2017.
Born March 14, 1940, in Cherokee County, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Jessie J. Mathis and the late Viola Splawn Mathis.
A United States Army veteran, John was Program Manager during Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he was responsible for 27 projects valued at $347 million dollars. As a result of his leadership and technical capabilities, millions of people will have more reliable electricity for years to come. He served as a civilian employee of the U. S. State Department in Karbala, Iraq from 2009-2011. He was employed with the Army Corps of Engineers and was of the Presbyterian faith.
In addition this parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jane O'Neal Mathis, and two brothers, William Mathis and Gerald Mathis.
Survivors include his brothers, Raymond Mathis (Ruth) of Boiling Springs, South Carolina and Carl Mathis (Virginia) of Inman, South Carolina, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 1:45 o\'clock Monday afternoon, September 25, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel - 2075 East Main Street in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The funeral service will be held at 2 o\'clock Monday afternoon in Floyd\'s Greenlawn Chapel conducted by The Reverend Michael Stepp. Burial, with military honors, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens - 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road in Spartanburg.
