LTC George Bernard Meehan, Jr., U. S. Air Force (Ret.), 91, and widower of Jean Mallard Meehan, his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2015, at The Marshes of Skidaway Island.



Born in Savannah, Georgia, he was the son of the late George Bernard Meehan, Sr. and the late Elizabeth Badger Meehan. ??Mr. Meehan was a member of Skidaway Island United Methodist Church. He graduated from Savannah High School and received his bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Florida. ??Mr. Meehan worked as a certified public accountant for the Appellate division of the Internal Revenue Service in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. ??After retiring from the IRS, he and Jean moved to St. Thomas and St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, where he served as a consultant to the Virgin Islands government. ??After many years, he returned home to Jacksonville, where Jean passed away. ??He later met and married Alice Fones Meehan and moved to St. Augustine, Florida. ??Upon Alice's death, he returned to Savannah to be near his family and resided there for the remaining years of his life.



Mr. Meehan was a veteran of World War II, the Korean conflict, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam War. ??During World War II, he was an Air Force navigator who survived thirty-five missions, flying B-17s out of Foggia, Italy with the 15th Air Force.



Surviving are his sister, Jackie Saunders; his daughter, Susan Bridgers (Dan); his sons, Jeff Meehan (Tricia), Mark Meehan (Becky), and Steve Meehan (Susan). ??He had ten grandchildren; Scott Meehan, who predeceased him and nine surviving grandchildren: Marissa Walter (Chris), Jennifer Palmer (Bo), Ashley Jaszczak (Drew), Michael Meehan (Anna), Tyler Meehan, Matthew Meehan, Patrick Meehan, Matt Bridgers, and Emma Kate Meehan.



The memorial service, with full military honors, will be held at 10:30 Saturday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by The Reverend Tom Nichols.
