Louise Olliff Barnes, 84, of Savannah, Georgia, widow of Nesbert Asbury 'Bo' Barnes and co-founder of Barnes Restaurants, died Thursday evening, July 26, 2018, at Hospice Savannah after a short illness and with her family by her side.
Born in Statesboro, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Lester Olliff and the late Jannie Iler Olliff. Mrs. Barnes was an active member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. She attended Marvin Pittman Lab School in Statesboro and earned her teaching certificate from Georgia Teachers College which later became part of Georgia Southern. She and Bo met when they worked for the Savannah Morning News and were married in 1956. During her early years, Mrs. Barnes raised her sons while also substitute teaching in Chatham County Public Schools. In 1968, she and Bo opened the Dairy Queen at Montgomery Street and Mills B. Lane and operated it until 1975. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes founded Barnes Restaurant in 1975 and their legacy continues to operate today. They both worked diligently in the business and befriended many customers over the years. With her best friend, she also co-owned and operated a gift shop for Savannah tourist and was a part of a Clown Ministry for nursing homes.
In addition to her husband of 53 years and her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include two sons, Alan Brandt Barnes and his wife, Cynthia Creighton-Jones, and Hugh Lange Barnes, all of Savannah, Georgia; four grandchildren, Caroline, Douglas, Jack and William; one sister-in-law, Barbara Ann Tyson and her husband, Tim, of Savannah, Georgia; several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Peter J. Hartmann. Interment will be at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
