Lorton Stoy Livingston

Lorton Stoy Livingston, 97, widower of Margaret Gilchrist Livingston, died Friday morning, March 14, 2014, at Buckingham South under the care of Hospice Savannah.



Lorton Livingston was born in Savannah, Georgia, January 10, 1917, the son of the late John Kilpatrick Livingston and Ethel Stoy Livingston. He graduated from Lawrenceville School in 1935 and Princeton University in 1939.



During World War II, Lorton Livingston served as a Captain in the 29th Field Artillery Battalion supporting the 4th Infantry Division. On D-Day June 6th, 1944 he landed on Utah Beach in an LCM about one hour after the first troops ashore. When one firing battery was lost at sea during that landing, he was charged with the reorganization of B Battery which he commanded after the liberation of Cherbourg and during Operation Cobra-the breakout at St Lo which enabled American forces to fight free of the Cotentin Peninsula. With B Battery 29th Field Artillery 4th Infantry Division he participated in the liberation of Paris, August 25, 1944 and crossed France to penetrate the Siegfried defense line in Germany on September 14.?? He fought in the Battle of Hurtgen Forest in November 1944 and successfully defended Luxembourg City against German counterattack in the Battle of the Bulge in December. His combat experience ended when he was wounded by a mine which killed two of his companions in a jeep January 28, 1945. He was awarded 3 Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.



After the war, he worked for Varnedoe, Chisholm & Co in stocks and bonds. From 1950-1965 he worked at Morgan's, Inc., as a partner, Treasurer and Vice-President. He then owned Atlantic States Personnel from 1967-1977. His interest in education led him to serve as Chairman of Incorporation for Savannah Country Day School and later as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.?? He also served for two years as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Savannah Science Museum.?? For 22 years he was a member of the Advisory Board of the Citizens & Southern National Bank. He served as a Board Member and President of the Savannah Golf Club and as a member of the Board of Governors and President of the Oglethorpe Club. His interest in history involved him in the Georgia Historical Society as a curator and in the Colonial Wars Society as member of the council and a Governor. Activities also included serving as a vestryman of Christ Episcopal Church on two occasions. He was a proud member of St Andrews Society, where he served as President, and also Savannah's Rotary Club.



He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Gilchrist Livingston, and his son, Lorton Stoy Livingston, Jr.



He is survived by two daughters, Margaret Gilchrist Livingston and Brooks Livingston Worley; daughter-in-law, Clayton Lawton Livingston; son-in-law William Paul Worley III;?? four grandchildren: Laura Worley Bieze, John Kilpatrick Livingston, William Paul Worley IV, Corinne Baldwin Livingston; two great grandchildren: Henry Baxter Bieze and William Thomas Bieze.



The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Monday, March 24, 2014, at St John's Church followed by a reception in the Green Meldrim House. A private graveside service, with military honors, will be in Bonaventure Cemetery.
