SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Leon Isadore Smithberg, 87, died Wednesday evening, July 21, 2010, at Hospice House surrounded by his loving family.
A lifelong Savannah resident, he was a World War II Veteran where he served in the Army Air Force with the 315th Bomb Wing. He then started in the watch repair and jewelry business working up to owning Malitz Jewelers where he was the watch timekeeper for the rail conductors of the Central of Georgia Railroad. Together with his wife, the former Betty Jean Weiser who preceded him in death in 1987, they owned Weiser's Jewelers one of the earliest "boutique" estate jewelry retailers for the Savannah area. After leaving the jewelry business for a brief time, he returned to work with Friedman and Company until his retirement. Leon's quick wit and passion for the outdoors coupled with a love of fishing earned him the nickname "Fuskie" referencing the many antics he devised off of neighboring Daufuskie Island. He was a dedicated volunteer and a respected member of the BB Jacob Brotherhood, JEA, JEA Men's Club, JEA Kibbitzer's Club, and the Jewish War Veterans.
Surviving are sons, Steven Malcolm Smithberg and Roy Smithberg; daughter-in-law, Patricia Lynn Smithberg; brother, Maurice Smithberg; sister-in-law, Betty Smithberg, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The funeral service was held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, July 22, 2010, at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.
