Leon Slotin, 99, died Thursday, July 12, 2023 at his Savannah home. He was born in Savannah, the son of the late Morris and Elizabeth Slotin. He graduated from Benedictine Military Academy and the University of Georgia and was a World War II veteran who served in the US Army in the Pacific from 1943 to 1946. Leon returned home to work in the family business, Slotin and Company, the largest dry goods wholesaler in the southeast. After his father's death, Leon held key executive positions in the company until he joined New York Life, where he had a highly successful career spanning over 50 years. During that time, Leon mentored dozens of agents to help them build their own successful careers. His office seminars came to be known as “Slotin University.” A man of deep faith, he was a member of Bnai Brith Jacob Synagogue, where he was loved, and known for his prominent role in the High Holiday services for 75 years.
In business and life, Leon Slotin was passionate about serving others. He was unfailingly generous with his money and his time. If you were his family, his friend, or his client he was on your side, and when he was on your side you felt you couldn’t lose. You felt you were a better person for having known him.
Until the day he died, Leon remained actively engaged in the world around him. He was an avid follower of the news, politics, and sports. There was nothing he loved more than talking with friends of all ages, hearing about the adventures of the younger generation, and doing whatever made his beloved wife happy.
Leon is survived by his wife of 75 years Nancy Levington Slotin, his daughter Jane Slotin, his granddaughter Micaela Slotin, his daughter-in-law Bonnie Juengert, and three generations of nieces, nephews, and cousins who adored him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son Morris (Moe) Slotin; his brothers Bernie, Albert, and Harry Slotin; and his sisters Ida Wilensky, Miriam Levy, and Rita Rosenstein.
The graveside funeral service conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus will be held at 11 o’clock Sunday morning, July 16, 2023 at Bonaventure Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice, or the Savannah Jewish Federation; the Bnai Brith Jacob Synagogue; the Alee Shriner Morris Slotin Fund; the Morris Slotin Physical Therapy Scholarship at Georgia Southern, established in memory of his son.
